Latty Christmas

Scott looked up at the Christmas tree, the star at the top shined brightly. Too brightly Scott thought feeling half sad and half grouchy. The house was quiet and he just stood there in the dark, only the lights from the Christmas tree lighting the room. Every Christmas Scott couldn’t help but remember the past, the past with Laura. It made him both angry and sad. She didn’t deserve his time Scott thought. Every time he laid his heart out to her she would rip it to shreds. And now she was back with Luke. He hated Port Charles. Everywhere else no one knew who the hell Luke and Laura were. They were as interesting as watching paint dry. But here in twisted Port Chuck, where mobsters and killers were treated as saints and the good as trash, Luke and Laura were everywhere. Its bad enough he had to live in a twisted town like this where he had to have Luke and Laura thrown in his face constantly. He thought of moving from time to time quickly changing his mind when Lucy would give him the look of death when he mentioned the thought. Not to mention Gail’s look of utter hurt. He didn’t mean he would move to Istanbul he just meant away from here, Away from Luke and Laura. Scott felt claustrophobic all of a sudden. He needed some fresh air; he needed to get out of the house and away from the Christmas tree and the star that taunted him. Scott grabbed his coat by the door and looked up at the stairs. Gail and Lee where sleeping over in the guest room and Serena was also fast asleep. Would anyone notice him gone? He would come back before they noticed, before he would have to come back and pretend to be cheery again for Serena’s sake. Scott opened the door feeling the cold seep into his bones quickly. It was freezing and the middle of the night but Scott welcomed the cold to the warmth of his house. It was somewhat masochistic in a way. He didn’t want to feel warm and happy it was easier to feel like shit. Scott drove around eventually ending up at a park. He realized when he got out of his car and walked around where he was. Scott looked around; his subconscious must have guided him to the park where he was first married to Laura. In fact he was standing near the spot they were married at. He thought back:

Scott: “Laura, to our marriage I will give the most important thing I own: my life. This has been a day we’ve both fought for, but I’m grateful now for all the difficulties we’ve gone through because they’ve only brought us closer together and made us more certain of our love. I believe in my heart and mind that we were meant to be together, Laura and I’m going to spend the rest of my life proving to you and to those who are close to us that your love and marriage were meant to be. This is the happiest day of my life.”

Scott scoffed half in anger and half in grief. Well he didn’t have to prove for too long their short lived marriage was shattered and there was nothing he could ever do about it. He was young, stupid, and in love. He was sure not to make that mistake now in his adult life. He had given her his life though. She still owned it. He fought to get it back, fought to be “normal” again and if it wasn’t for Serena who knew where he would be. She filled the holes in his heart with love just like Dominique had. Someone was always around to fix what Laura had broken so recklessly but they couldn’t erase the scar. He was a damned fool Scott thought. He knew he would always love her and what was sad is that he loved everything about her even her faults. He loved her so much he hated her guts. Being around her made him both happy and repulsed. His eyes stung with tears. His emotions were so conflicted and he hated himself for still loving her more than any woman and his other side would hate him for hating her. It was enough to make his head spin around until the world was just a blur. “I hate you Laura Spencer.”
“Is that so?”
Scott turned around stunned that someone was there or was he hearing things? Laura stood there her arms wrapped around her chest her bottom lip shivering. Figures, Scott thought, she would show up right when he said that how classic. Laura arched her brow waiting for an answer. Scott moved closer his eyes on her. “Yes” he said contradicting his words by caressing her face with one gloved hand. Laura looked hurt, her eyes told him so. Scott continued “You think everyone loves you? The famous Laura Spencer of Port Charles? Who has defeated evil on different occasions? Saved the world from freezing to death? Adventure goddess? The woman who broke my heart three times? And you’re shocked that I don’t hate you? I must be out of my mind! To hate Laura Spencer!” Scott scoffed his warm breath causing smoke.
“I deserved that.” Laura said not breaking eye contact with Scott.
“You deserve more than that.” Scott ran his finger over her lips. He wished he could feel them.
“If you hate me so much then leave” Laura said.
“It’s a public park. You can’t control everything Laura. I never meant to imply that you were all-powerful.” Scott smirked and walked a few steps away from her turning his back to her.
“Fine then I’ll leave”
Scott remained quiet. Laura stood there waiting for him to respond. He did nothing. Laura sighed heavily trying to get a reaction from him, any type of acknowledgement.
“It’s Christmas Scotty I don’t want to fight with you.”
“Then don’t.” Scott said simply.
“Do you remember?” Laura said softly.

“I don’t want to remember.” Scott said as he turned around. He moved closely to her. “Do you want me to remember? Do you honestly feel you need to cause me more pain?” Scott began to circle her until he was behind her. His hands held her shoulders as he whispered in her ear “Do you derive pleasure from my pain Laura?” Scott inhaled her sent; indulging his senses with her sweet smell.
“Of course I don’t” Laura whispered back trying to turn around. Scott held her firmly with enough pressure to keep her from looking at him without hurting her.
“Are you going to cry?” Scott whispered back his voice void of emotions.
“It seems like you are the one that derives pleasure from my pain Scotty.”
Scott chuckled, half from the truth of it and half because she was making herself the victim as always. “Poor Laura Spencer always the victim.”
Laura turned around this time her blue eyes burning with anger. “I’ve had enough of this.”
“Then go. No one is holding you here.”
Laura studied him, his face and his body. He had aged; she couldn’t help but wonder how many of those winkles around his eyes she had caused. His eyes seemed a darker, colder shade of blue. His face no longer baby smooth, instead a goatee hid what she assumed more lines, frown lines caused by her most likely. He looked like a man, no longer that young boy she remembered. She realized she hadn’t really looked at him even when she was with him. She regretted that now, wondering how his face and body must feel under her finger tips. “If I were to go would that make you happy?
“Maybe” was all Scott said.
“If you hated me you would have said yes.”
Scott smirked knowing what she had said was true. “Go home to Spencer. It’s always a fun Christmas watching him drink until he passes out. What do you do gather the kids around him and hang ornaments from his limp body?”
“Are you that jealous of Luke?”
“How dare you even mention that! Jealous of him? No. Do I feel pity for your children? Yes. I even feel pity for you until I remember you are with him voluntarily. I am hundred times more a man than Luke will ever be on his good day’s maybe that’s what scarred you off, you just can’t live a normal happy life.”
“You are a good man and a good father.”
Scott remained quiet. It was cold out but neither of them noticed. “Yeah I guess those aren’t good qualifications to be with Laura Spencer.”
“Why do you keep saying my whole name?”
“Cause that’s who you are now, Laura Spencer or do you prefer Laura Webber Baldwin Spencer Cassadine Spencer?”
“Just Laura, Scott Baldwin”
“Ha. Cute” Scott replied not amused.
“I think you still love me.” Laura said changing the subject quickly.
“Yeah?” Scott replied.

“Yeah” Laura said back to him.
“I should have known you would be so vain.”
“Then leave.”
“Unlike Spencer, I do care that others don’t get hurt. I’m not leaving you in the park alone in the middle of the night, wouldn’t want your death to be on my conscious.”
“I’m a big girl I can take care of myself.”
“Of course you can!” Scott said as if he just realized something big. “You’re Laura Spencer! Superwoman of Port Charles!” He hit his head “How could I be so stupid?”
Laura gave him an annoyed glance which made Scott chuckle. He always found her adorable when she was angry. “Have it your way. I’ll leave since you keep insisting on it.” Scott began to walk away but stopped. He turned around and walked up to Laura pressing his lips against hers surprising her. “Merry Christmas” Laura could feel his warm breath on her face. Scott walked away, back to his car. He sat in it while it heated up, rubbing his gloved hands together noticing the cold now a million thoughts running through his head. Eventually he pulled out of the parking lot and drove around mindlessly. He found an open place, a bar. He pulled into the parking lot grateful something was open at this hour.

Laura followed Scott in her car. She wondered if he had notice. She saw him pull into a bar and quickly followed finding a parking quickly. She sat in the car trying to gather her thoughts. Was she doing the right thing? Laura glanced at her watch it was almost 1:30. She didn’t feel like going home. She knew what she would do at home, sit and stare at the Christmas tree remembering, it was the same thing that drove her out of the house. Luke wasn’t even home when she left and she figured he was out somewhere causing some kind of havoc. Without a second thought she took a deep breath and got out of her car. The moment she stepped into the bar she wanted to go and hide. All the men leered at her and made catcalls and sexual remarks at her. She cringed and took it while she scanned for Scott feeling her lungs where going to explode from both the smoke that filled the air and the smell of vomit. She spotted him at a table at the end in the shadows. He sat there staring at his drink which was full. She quickly walked over to his table and sat in the opposite seat keeping her purse clutched to her side. Scott looked up, surprised that she was there. Before he could speak Laura beat him to it.
“My name is Laura” she said holding out her hand.
Scott looked at her like she had gone nuts. “I know.”
Laura grimaced slightly. “And you are?”
Scott finally got the hint “Elvis”
“Elvis?”
Scott could see the hope in her eyes that he would play along. Just what was her game now? Scott was unsure and weary. “Scott Bal…”
“Nice to meet you Scott” Laura placed her hand in Scott’s and they shook hands briefly. “Do you come here often?”
“First time.”
“Mine too”
“Hmmm”
“So…..watcha drinkin’?”

“Not sure. Just told the bartender to mix every strong alcohol together. It doesn’t really have a name. I guess we can call the drink…..hmmmm….Mrs. Spencer… in honor of the woman who drove me to this bar on early Christmas morning.”
“How did she get you here?”
“She broke my heart three times. Three miserable times.”
“Three?”
“The first time she ran off with this crazy guy while we were married. The second time she wanted a divorce from me while I was already down in the dumps cause of her in Mexico. The third time I went to her wedding to that crazy nut and tried to win her back only to end up knocked out on the floor while she ran off with him, not even looking back at me. Oh and there’s a fourth time! How could I forget? She finally wants me back and then she ignores me throughout the relationship and when I propose she refused and goes back to that psycho old man.”
“She sounds pretty heartless.”
“Yep. She’s heartless but looks like an angel. Aren’t those the worst?”
“So why do you still love her?”
“Because I vowed the day I married her that I would give her my life.”
“She doesn’t deserve you then. Maybe she feels that every time she was with you after running away with Lu….that crazy man.”
Scott cocked an eyebrow up.
“Maybe she feels that when she ran away and left you that it was the biggest mistake of her life. So to cope instead of feeling incredibly depressed she emerged herself with this other man who was not as perfect. In fact, he was less than perfect and she felt that was what she deserved because she realized she was scum. So she kept convincing herself that by not being with you and being with this equally scummy person that she could protect you in a way, protect you from her and from another horrible mistake. When in reality she was running away from something she was scarred of.”
“Ands what exactly do you think she was scarred of?”
“Being less than perfect. You probably knew this woman so well that you never idealized her, never made her your “angel”. See when you are perfect you can’t hurt anyone. Then when she gathered her courage to be with you again she runs away, that’s the only thing she knows how to do. She was never taught to stay fight; someone always fought for her and cleaned up the mess. She wanted to get close to you but was afraid you would think she hadn’t changed and hadn’t learned from her mistakes in the past which she felt was true.”
Scott looked into Laura’s eyes which were starting to get watery.
“I’m sure if she were here she would want to tell you that she was sorry. Somehow she doesn’t feel like it’s enough and she doesn’t know how to make it up to you so she feels incredible guilt.”
“Let’s get out of here.”
Scott threw some singles on the table and grasped Laura elbow helping her up and then escorting her out of the noisy bar. Once there were outside they didn’t speak Scott just walked straight to his car, the only SUV in the parking lot, and pinned Laura to the passenger front door.
“You never told me why you were here.”

“Because I realized I had this great wonderful man more than once and I ran away from him trying to convince myself that it was the right thing to do when in fact it was the worst thing to do.”
“What caused you to feel this way?”
“The horrible man I’m with didn’t come home tonight after he promised his daughter he would help her write a letter to Santa, he didn’t even call. I wasn’t very surprised. But it’s my fault because I keep him in our lives and he just keeps hurting my children. I try to at like I’m better than him but I’m not. I’m probably worse.” Laura hung her head as tears slipped down her cheeks. She hoped her hair would cover her face.
Scott moved closer to her, until her head bumped into his chest. He pulled his arms around her, holding her, wanting to comfort her, his heart was aching seeing her in pain. “Maybe we could comfort each other tonight” Scott whispered in Laura ear. “I know a place we can go.”
Laura looked up at Scott, expecting to see the “I told you so” look in his eyes. Instead she found his eyes were warmer than before. Quietly she got in his car and they drove off in silence until they came to a hotel.
“It’s not the ritzy PC one, but it ain’t half bad either.”
Quietly they checked into a room, the bellboy looked at them like she was his hooker. Eventually they were inside their room alone. Laura sat down on the edge of the bed as Scott stood by the door fidgeting.
“Come here” Laura whispered quietly.
Scott sat down beside her on the bed.
Laura climbed up on Scott’s lap. She sat down, her hands running over his face and hair.
“Do you want me to turn off the lights?”
“No.” Laura remained silent as she ran a fingertip over one the wrinkles by his eyes. “I want to study you. I want to know every part of you.”
“We don’t have to do this Laura.”

Laura skimmed the roughness of his goatee with a finger. “Please don’t leave. I want to do this. I want one night when I don’t have to think of the mess I’ve made with my life. Just let me……kiss you.” Laura leaned forward her lips lightly touching Scott’s. She licked his bottom lip, before kissing him softly. Tears ran down her face as she kissed him gently as waves of guilty came over her.
“Don’t cry Laura. I don’t hate you.” Scott whispered against Laura’s lips. “I’m sorry I was so mean to you tonight, I was a jerk. Do you forgive me?”
“You weren’t being a jerk, you were saying what you felt and you had those feelings because of me.”
“I love you Laura. I love you so much it hurts.” Scott gently kissed Laura on the lips. His hands caressed the side of her face as he continued. “I just want you to be happy and I know Spencer isn’t good enough to make you happy. You’re so special Laura, how can was I ever supposed to stop loving you?”
Laura sniffled. “I can never make it up to you, the awful things I’ve done in the past.”
“I’ve done just as awful things but if you move on then those things don’t haunt you.” Scott began to kiss Laura neck, his rough goatee rubbing against Laura’s soft skin, sending waves of pleasure up her spine. “I’ve missed you so much.” Scott whispered before moving to the other side.
Laura ran her hands through his hair. “I’ve missed you too. Scotty, I promise I won’t ever hurt you again, I’ll prove it to you with the rest of my life.”
Scott looked into Laura’s eyes. “And for the rest of my life I’ll prove to you that I love you no matter what you do. I just hope that you come to me instead of run away.”
“I promise Scotty.” Laura kissed Scott before pushing him down gently. She began to take of his coat and sweater. Once his chest was bare she ran her hands over him, noticing the differences from before. She ran her fingertips up his chest and over his shoulders and arms and back down to the top of his pants. Scott lifted his hands to copy what she was doing to him to her. Instead, Laura pulled them away and continued running her hands over his lower stomach. Her fingers passed over the buttons and she undid it, unzipping the zipper next. She removed the rest of his clothes, studying him with her eyes. Slowly he removed all of her clothes pulling her down on the bed with him. Leisurely they explored each other’s body, noting the changes and the parts that had remained the same. They made love slowly, holding hands, getting to know each other intimately again.

Sometime later, holding each other close, Scott started kissing Laura forehead, moving down to her ear. She giggled in her sleep and eventually woke up.
“I have to get back home. Serena will most likely be waking up at the crack of dawn.”
“Lulu will be too. Scotty can I ask you a favor?”
“Sure.”
“Can I spend Christmas with you. I know you probably want to spend time with just your family but I don’t want to see Luke today. After Lulu is in bed I’ll break it off with Luke for good.”
“Laura you are my family. You and your children. Of course you can spend Christmas with us. In fact I would be delighted if you did.”
Laura looked up into his eyes a smile spread across her face. She kissed Scotty lightly and whispered against his lips, “I love you Scotty. Merry Christmas.”
“I love you too Laura. And this is the best Christmas yet. And you….you are my favorite gift of all even better than that G.I. Joe command center set I got when I was 10. ”
Laura giggled. “I’m so honored.”
“You should be. Unlike that center set, I won’t ever loose interest in you. Once you’re in my life it’s going to be hard to get out.”
“This time around you couldn’t get me to budge from your arms even if you wanted to” Laura smiled and wrapped her arms tighter and Scott reciprocated. This time he would never let go.
